The village of Istron has been set up on the ancient town of Istrona. Excavated remains can still be seen. A “conservation order” protects the area and especially the coastline; this prohibits any new buildings. As a result the preserved natural landscape, the pebble beaches and beautiful sand provide the most relaxing and pleasant scene.
Istro is situated at the centre of Prefecture of Lasithi. The distance from the Airport and Port of Heraklion is approximately 75 km, which is about an hour's drive by car, approximately 11 km from the Port of Aghios Nikolaos, 15 km from Elounda (Spinalonga) , approximately 25 km from Ierapetra, the southernmost town in Europe, while Sitia, a town with airport, is approximately 65 km away.
